Hark the herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

2014 is almost over and as we mark the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Bill we also realize that the journey continues. Recent events have put the issue of race relations back at the forefront of our daily lives. I speak of course of the Grand Jury decisions in Ferguson and now right here in NYC. Hunter College's Silberman School of Social Work, where my favorite professor works, responded this way;
All of us have been saddened but not surprised by the recent grand jury decisions, first in Ferguson Missouri, and today in New York City. The issues of social injustice and racism are persistent, pervasive, and permeate our major societal institutions, including education, health care, economic development, and of course, the criminal justice system. The enduring relationship between inequality, race, and poverty is the reason the School mounted our lecture series in Inequality. We held the inaugural lecture this past November.
Many of us have been taking individual action, and the issues have certainly been carefully discussed in our classrooms and field placements. Now in direct response to the grand jury decisions we have organized a faculty committee to plan our School's work. The committee is chaired by Professor Willie Tolliver and includes several faculty members, as well as members of our Field and Student Services staff. I am sure they will be reaching out for student and alumni participation as well.
The committee's work will involve at least three activities: crafting a School response for faculty review, planning a school wide "Teach In" to take place early in the spring semester, and scheduling faculty development so we can add appropriate material throughout our curriculum. Please follow the School website and our Facebook page for updates on these plans.

We must strive to become more...........

There is always something to be thankful for. No matter our struggles, our set backs and failures and losses. We are here for a purpose and we journey through this finite existence; our vacation from eternity. Making our life better is not always the reason for our being. The challenges we face may be exactly what we need. The suffering we give to others may also be their test to overcome. But when we put a smile on another's face or we give pleasure and a sense of happiness there is a spark of energy that can be interpreted as our very spark of life.
Be thankful for your existence, be thankful for your sufferings, be thankful for the hate and the prejudice. Be thankful for the loss of life and the pain of disease. Be thankful for this vacation from the eternity. It may be your only escape. Through our challenges we become stronger. Do you really want to be the one that watches everything fade to black by your self?
